OCULUS MEDIUM *

Description

Oculus Medium is a virtual reality sculpting tool, and was developed and produced as a first party application out of Oculus SF. Medium was conceived of to break the boundaries of sculpting on 2D surfaces like Wacoms and screens, and bring the art into a 3D, digital space. The program shipped in December 2016, free for all Oculus Rift users with Touch Controllers.

In September 2019, it was announced with Medium was moving to Adobe and folding into Adobe’s Substance 3D and Immersive brand as “Adobe Modeler.”

Role: Technical Program Manager, or Producer
Compatibility: Rift or Rift S, with Touch Controllers

Favorite moments included:

  • Feature development of sculpting tools, art environment, and proprietary game engine via daily agile ceremonies, task tracking, and stable release systems

  • Managed QA testing and power-user community for feature feedback and bug tracking

  • Created website on Oculus.com for users to host and share 3D models of Medium sculpts

  • Produced SculptShare networking feature, enabling a 3D instance of another avatar and their sculpt to share your space!

  • Community management of multiple Medium Facebook groups, forums, and social media posts, including deployment of power user channel which was used heavily for art curation, feature feedback, and bug tracking

  • 3D printing countless models originally made in Medium - because Medium meshes were watertight! - with resin printer, and cleaning them carefully with a pressure washer

  • Facilitating a game jam in Berlin for developers and technical artists in an immersive coworking space to create new applications with models made in Medium

  • Assisting with the creation of a hilarious VR game “Beach Body Bros” using VR models made in Medium, and learning from the process of topologizing, animating, and texturing models

  • Producing “Corpus Misty,” a feminist experience with models made with Medium, and having it enter Sundance 2019

  • Hosting a VR live sculpting battle in New York City, as part of a three-city tournament to face off in a championship sculpting battle in Tokyo
